Sleeping Beauty by secondlina Sleeping Beauty by secondlina

Sleeping beauty is a really intriguing fairy tale. I mean, there's so much to play with. This is my interpretation of Sleeping beauty and the fairies, which includes the mean fairy. She's obviously inspired by Maleficent, who is the coolest. I really love that people adapting the tale often give the bad fairy a backstory. I really enjoyed the version they had in Castle Waiting too.

Bad fairies, good fairies, sleeping ladies. All cool stuff.

I love your take on Maleficient (the hair horns are cool)

Personally, I'm a little annoyed that Disney wants to turn Maleficient into "Disney-Elphaba" by adding a cliche "tragic woobie backstory" and trying to make it seem as if she's somehow justified in placing a coma-curse on a baby. Maybe it's just me, but I think the character is more fun as a crazy, badass Dragon Witch.

I like the idea of giving her a backstory (I kinda like the idea that her wings got stolen) and i'm a fan of the idea of frenemies, but yeah, softening her story might have been an odd move? Hopefully the movie is quality enough to make up for it.

Frankly, I think it was the bad fairy's OWN fault she wasn't invited. If she had just gone out once in a while and shown people she was still around, they wouldn't have thought she was dead!
Nice work on the good fairies by the by. I like how their colors reflect of each other. And I love your brunette beauty!

I liked the idea of her as a brunette. Allowed to put purple everywhere.

The original Sleeping Beauty fairy tales are pretty messed up--especially the Italian one "Sun Moon and Talia" and the Perault version. Ironically enough, the Grimm's version is actually quite tame compared to the first two mentioned.

I like your version of the wicked fairy-- in the Perault tale she wasn't invited because she was genuinely forgotten about. In fact, she was so ancient, they actually thought she was dead.

I also like your little fairies--quite cute.

I like that idea... her being forgotten.

Yeah, she had not been seen out of her tower in 50 years so it's completely understandable. In the Grimm's version, there were thirteen wise women, but because they only had twelve plates, one had to stay home--and she was NOT happy about it.

This is wonderful as always. I never liked the Disney interpretation of the good fairies- bumbling idiots with no dignity or grace- but here they seem like true fairies, while Maleficent looks almost beneficent.

Well who knows... maybe she put the princess to sleep to offer her a different destiny in another century.

That would certainly be an interesting interpretation! Maleficent as the benefactor of princesses everywhere, allowing them to escape the patriarchal past and awaken in a time when they can choose their own fate.

I'll be this would make a great tattoo! Of course, I just finished watching a season of Ink Master so maybe I have tattoos on the brain but with the linework, hard outlines, subtle shading, even the curling vines, I'll bet it would be awesome.

Sweeeeeet!

If I was comparing them, the fairy/witch villian in Sleeping Beauty always seemed like a better villain than the Evil Queen in Snow White.  No matter how they adapt her it seems like the Evil Queen is always just...  A petty, irritating, psycho bitch.  I guess the same can be said for the fairy/witch of Sleeping Beauty, but...  for some reason she doesn't seem as annoying as TEQ...   Is that weird?
