Labyrinth - Lie to me by secondlina Labyrinth - Lie to me by secondlina
Lie to me, make me feel real

Lie to me, make me feel love…

So, this may seem like blasphemy to some fans of the original, but i’d love to see a remake of the Labyrinth one day. You know, as a high-fantasy musical. A real musical, where everyone sings. And Sarah is twice as badass. And the costumes and puppets are even crazier then before. And the Goblin King is played by an awesome actor closer to Sarah’s age group. But Bowie still gets a role somewhere, as a teller of stories-badass-grampa.

I’m just saying, the original was cool, and we can make it even cooler.

(Plus, Sarah could be dressed basically the same way and STILL be in fashion)

I really like your art style with this story. They go so well together. Wouldn't it be cool if this world showed up in Namesake?

Really? I thought maybe you could get away with it as "fair use" or something... but now that I say that I really don't see how. For some reason I thought Labyrinth was based on a book but Wikipedia proved me wrong. Nevermind, then! :)

It is based on a children's book which is also still copyrighted and a very different story. Only the basic plot is the same. I HIGHLY recommend that book as a read though, because it's by Maurice Sendak, who is a god among storytellers. It's called "Outside over there". See link : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outside_…

Actual novelization of the Labyrinth's story are post-movie.

In general, Sendak's book and Labyrinth are heavily inspired by changeling stories and lore (very interesting fairy tales, I recommend you do a google search and enjoy your finds!) which is something I adore. I will most likely use changeling lore in namesake... or in other stories.

Fairy tale encyclopedia out. *laughs*

On the artwork: Awesome.

On the remake idea: Could be awesome if done right. There are so many things that could go wrong, but on the other hand, there are so many things that could go RIGHT. As a musical? Meh. The IDEA sounds strange, but then again, they have Sailor Moon and Black Butler musicals in Japan, and those came out awesome, so it could certainly work. Awesome costuming and puppets-Yes. Don't forget the awesome scenery, though, that'll have to be there, stage or actual film, or what. Bowie guest-starring would be cool, but let's not forget that the actress who played Sarah should get to guest-star too because why not. And they COULD get a guy closer to Sarah's age group to play Jareth, but then if they can't get anyone they may have to bump her age up a bit storywise.

Of course, fans might not like it. Oh no, they will certainly complain until they actually see for themselves what it's like. But of course, you never know. You never know..

Or they could just do an adaption of Return to Labyrinth because why not.

This is in my faves SPECIFICALLY for the idea. I think it would work out! I think people would be curious enough to give it a shot, if only as a cult following, and if it were well done it would get a whole new generation of followers. It's a gorgeous storyline and I think it can stand as-is today.

You've just proposed the coolest idea ever, that would be SO AWESOME. Although it could never happen, because as you say fans would hate it and the cynicism alone would make it flop instantly (like what happened to the LotR musical, which was the best thing I've seen on stage, and I've seen ALOT of stuff on stage, that was just amazing in all aspects of theatre. But fans hated it, because ofcourse how can you recreate the original onto stage without making it different in some ways? impossible. :( ) But for alot of people, if its not exactly like the original, it isnt good enough! ;_;

....but a Labyrinth musical would be awesome.

Ah, cynicism. Booo. I really don't link how people always try to avoid change in adaptations. Different mediums call for different elements. There's always things that need to be kept, of course, but always having works that are carbon copies or old works is boring. Heck, the whole american comic industry lives off retelling and reboots, can you imagine?

I think LOTR fans are especially bad for this though. Most likely because the original work is so detailed and solid and researched.

Yay! I'm not the only one who feels this way. I love the original and it has its place, but a remake (during an era of remakes no less) could be completely badass... just don't replace the muppets with CG.

While the remake idea is intriguing (more of a re-imagining i'd say), my utter fondness for the original kinda balks at the idea. I guess it would depend on how well it was executed.

I don't know, if anything it would make people miss Jim Henson that much more! I loved the movie as a kid, still do, and I never thought anything odd about the age gap since Sarah wasn't exactly in love with Jareth. She was under the influence of that peach when she had the weird dream about dancing in the ballroom with him. Eh, I don't know. They'd probably use CGI for all of the fantastic characters, and I'm not sure how I'd feel about that. Actors always seem to do better when they have someone, even a puppet, to act against, as opposed to acting alone and having another added in digitally later.

But anyway, what's that little critter hanging out on Jareth's shoulder?

The age gap bothered me when I was a kid, but I don't mind it so much as an adult. I kind of assume Jareth is actually way, wayyy older than he looks, so...somehow that makes it better.

Interesting idea, and I totally get where you're coming from. When I was a little girl, I loved watching the animated Lord of the Rings movies from the 70's, and they will always have a special place in my heart despite the fact that they were cheesy as heck. Then they made the live action films, and LoTR was suddenly a thing that EVERYONE in my age group knew, and not just the really nerdy ones; I think I was maybe seven years old when Fellowship came out, and it blew my little mind. If they remade Labyrinth (which they could, considering it came from a book), I would fangirl SO. HARD. Especially if they did like you said, and gave Bowie a cameo or minor role somewhere.
