Alice Lidell and Lewis Carroll by secondlina Alice Lidell and Lewis Carroll by secondlina
EDIT - The webcomic this image was drawn for is now launched : [link]

I've been working with a friend on a webcomic story. And we have a date for the webcomic to be launched : September 14, 2010.

What's the story of this webcomic?

The webcomic, called "Namesake" goes as thus : "Did you ever wonder what would happen if you could really tumble down the rabbit hole and reach another world? Namesake is the story of two sisters who discover that traveling between worlds is real and necessary to keep the universe in balance."

The power of traveling thru worlds is passed down thru a name, and those who are named that way are chosen as the "universe" requires to fill out the gaps in the "stories". So you have "namesakes" or Alice (wonderland), Dorothy (Oz), Jack (Jack and the beastalk), Wendy (Peter Pan), Gerda (The snow queen). Various fairy tale worlds and stories are used, and the whole thing is going to be a mix of drama and humor. The "Namesakes" in the story aren't the "originals" from the fairy tales. They are, if anything, spiritual descendants.

This is the chapter drawing for the prologue.
The prologue is about the long dead Alice Lidell and Lewis Carroll, and the goal was to quote a bunch of Tenniel illustrations (from the original Alice books) with this drawing. Here are the drawings I mixed :

I’ll be posting more drawings and an announcement when the webcomic starts in September.

If you are a fan of fun, adventure, creepy creatures and fairy tales, this is a webcomic for you. So I hope that you will all be willing to give the comic a try when it comes up.

All "canon" Oz character are created by Baum (and public domain). All "Canon" Wonderland characters are created by Carroll (and public domain). Same goes for Peter Pan characters, originally created by Barrie. All original Namesake characters, designs and plot are copyrighted to me and Megan Lavey-heaton.

AAAAHHH. Isa, I can't believe this is the first time I'm seeing your dA! And I found you completely by accident! When I found this, I noticed how much it resembled the early Namesake art. And the little Cheshire made it especially obvious. <3 I love your art so much.

Alice sat quietly beside Lewis Carroll, carful not to move his arm so he wouldn't mess up.
"What part are you at?" she asked after a minute of so of silence
"You just met the Cheshire cat," replied Lewis quietly. Alice stood up in her chair to see his writings. Just then, A splendid grinning cat jumped out of the page and into Alice arms
"Cheshire!" exclaimed Alice happily "It's good to see you! I've been perfectly lonely with out you!" she said nodding
The Cheshire simply grinned
"Shhh..." said Lewis looking affectionately at his little character. Alice smiled at Lewis

Then Mr. Carroll woke up.

He had fallen asleep on his desk again, paper were strewn all over the floor, and he had ink smudges on his face. How simply wonderful that dream was, however it left Mr. Carroll feeling lonely, and sad.
Mr. Carroll found himself crying, then immediately stopped
"Oh poor Alice! I'm smudging up your story! I promise not to cry anymore!" he said wiping the tears from his face.
Mr. Carroll looked down at his many pages of words and pictures. How happy Alice looked, how innocent she was. Mr. Carroll was slightly jealous of Alice.
How loved Alice was.

Guard her well Mr. Carroll, she is not just a character written into words, she is your family. Don't let that slip away from you. It's amazing how fast you can lose your characters to memory.
So guard her well
Guard her well.

This is no namesake. This is no spiritual sucessor. This, my friend, is the One True Alice.

And I shall protect her. I shall protect her against the Impostor, against the Zenescope, against the cruel Deviantart users who seek to destroy or corrupt her. For I am like a father to her, and I shall care for her like a father takes care of his daughter.

Spiritual descendants? Like reincarnations or doppelgängers?

Well, in the context of Namesake, it's just that they fill the same "job".

I discovered Namesake through this picture and have been a great fan eer since. I vote on Top Web Comics every day. The story is great, especially how it dovetails in to actual historical events in the life of Alice Liddell and Charles Dodgson. Oh and there's Oz and The Red Shoes too (so far). Great art compelling story. A must read.

I didn't intend to make it sound like Wonderland is the main plot, these scenes are merely bookends to an immense and complex story.

They actually think Lewis Carrol had the same disability as me. It's a bit of a bragging point for me. XD

And now to go and read this webcomic for the premise sounds AWESOME. I love the idea that instead of blood relations, or some other more unlikely cosmic raffle, it's the names. I don't know why it just seems so cool.

Hope you enjoy it! I also though using names was pretty cool, considering how important they seem to be in fairy tales.

I seem to remember that once, I went through looking at your stuff on livejournal, and... Does Namesake take some of it's storyline from one of your older stories? I can't remember the name.

It almost seems like there's some kind of subtle power play going on here. Like Lidell wrote these stories while looking at alice as a child, but they've somehow transformed her into a more powerful figure and now he's thinking 'dear god what do I do now?'

Which might not be what you were going for at all, so I will go read the comic...

It is a little, actually. There's definitely a lot of emotional subtext, and a lot of worries on Lewis' part about his influence on Alice and her powers. You read that pretty right.

I hope you'll enjoy the comic! :D
